Condition: not solid gold but gilded color on both sides (much of which has worn away over the years), under the brass wire wrap is bone handle, the marking of "Otto Mertens Solingen" (see pic 2) can be seen on one side of blade near handle. On side of blade (in German) are different battles of the past battles displayed (see pics 7-10), pic 10 shows the years "1898/99". (Other side of blade is relatively plain (see pic 11). The cap at end of handle (see final pic) can be turned to tighten handle to sword connection. With it turned as much as I could there is a little looseness in the handle
