    Description

    An Imperial German Naval Officer's Damascus Sword to Dr. Friedrich Loening. Fine quality lionhead hilt with glass red and green eyes. Superb 76.5cm pipe backed damascus blade with spear point and with the makers mark " G.B.S." and the emblem of crossed swords. Reverce hilt of the sword is engraved with owners name " Dr. Loening". Complete with Imperial Naval pattern brass mounted leather scabbard and sword knot. The manufacturer's mark for "G.B.S." - Georg Bartling & Sohne; Factory since 1890, for the production of uniforms and equipment for the Navy. Loening served on a number of ships, to include the " AUGUSTA, BISMARCK, LOTHRINGEN, and others. This actual sword is also featured in " Collecting the Edged Weapons of Imperial Germany" ( by Johnson and Wittmann), Page 112., and further details of Dr Loening's service are also included.
