Description
Antique Barbour Brothers Quadruple Silver-plated Brides Basket circa 1880s. From the early 19th century until 1905, brides baskets were popular gifts. The baskets were used by the flower girls to toss flower petals and then to hold the bride's bouquet at the wedding banquet. Originally, they were made of sterling silver, but they became so popular that manufacturers began making silver plate baskets that were more affordable. This brides basket is one such basket. Barbour Brothers Company of New Haven, CT was in operation from 1881 until 1889 and was later absorbed by International Silver Company of Meriden, CT. This piece could have been manufactured after 1889; however, it is likely to have been made in the 1880s when brides baskets were the number one wedding gift. The piece is crenulated with floral chasing at the bottom and ornate legs. There is some tarnishing on the handle, the legs and the edges. The piece is 9 inches wide, 7.25 inches deep, and 3.5 inches high (not including the handle). This makes a great fruit bowl or could even be given as a unique wedding gift for a modern wedding!
