Offered is a quality Silver Plate Cake Stand Ca
. 1925
The Cake Stand was used on the Leviathan Ocean Liner for the traditional "high tea", to be ladened with tea cakes and plump scones.
Built in 1914 as the Vaterland for Germany's Hamburg-American Line, the ocean liner
Leviathan
was seized during WW I by the Americans and operated as a troopship.
In 1922-23, it was reconditioned and became the flagship of the new United States Lines, which operated until 1929. As a result of high operating costs and low Depression-era patronage, the Leviathan was sold to Scottish shipbreakers in 1938 and dismantled.
The Art Deco stand, with stylish braided top, is Marked LEVIATHAN PLATE. a trademark of Birmingham company S.J.Levi & co, active 1900-1930.
