History of the Animals in Barnum & Van Amburgh's Museum & Menagerie-1866--(No Reserve-Bid & the Item Will Sell)
ITEM: Soft Cover booklet, Illustrated and Descriptive History of the Animals contained in Barnum & Van Amburgh's Museum & Menagerie Combination, printed by S. Booth, New York City, 1866. Covers are in thin yellow paper. Front cover has that title text, with woodcut image of Van Amburgh in Roman costume with tiger and two lions. Inside front cover has woodcut image of Barnum's Zoological American Hall Museum, that was at 737, 539, and 541 Broadway, in New York City. Back cover has multi-images of numerous animals. Inside back cover has text describing what you would see at a visit to Barnum's American Museum. Since the covers have edge wear, as seen in the scanned images, they have not been reattached and are in a plastic sleeve with cardstock to prevent further damage.
The text signature has biographical information on both Van Amburgh and P. T. Barnum, with image of both men. Book is filled with images of the animals, with descriptions of each. Four sample pages can be seen in the attached images. There are almost 40 images of the animals in the book.
DATE: 1866
SIZE: 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches, stab stitched with thread, 70 pages/.
COND: Front and back covers are loose and have tears, edge wear and chips. Pieces of covers have been reassembled, and repaired with archival tissue tape on pieces and edge tears. Text block signature is stab stitched, as seen n second image, and is tight, with minor spotting on pages, and minor corner bumps. While cover is very work, text block signature is in otherwise very Fine condition. Please view the attached image to see the quality of this fine item.
