This pretty elegant large pitcher / jug is decorated with the
Lotus Bridal Bouquet
pattern. Bridal Bouqu
et was introduced in the 1940s and
many o
f t
he pieces made then were not
made later or associated with the Glastonbury name. Glastonbury was purchased by Lotus in the 1960s. We are unsure as to the maker of this pretty
pitcher so cannot accurately date the pitcher. The pitcher does not appear to be anything like the later stylized pieces that were made by Glastonbury Lotus, so we are dating this pitcher as having been made sometime in the 1930s. My feeling is that it is an earlier Lotus piece. This beautiful piece is in
Undamaged Condition without chips, cracks, or mold damage.
The etching is
beautiful. The pitcher is clean both inside and out.
Lotus Bridal Bouquet (1940s - 1960s) -
Bridal
Bouquet is a beautiful etch, that was introduced in the late 1930s. It is a busy pattern that
features a
floral basket within a w
reathe, surrounded by flowers Pieces were purchased from different
companies and Lotus added the Bridal Bouquet etch. Many of the pieces that were made in this pattern can be attributed to glass manufacturers such as New Martinsville, Paden City, or Cambridge. When a piece of Bridal
Bouquet was made by Paden City for example we know that the piece was etched by Lotus before they purchased
Glastonbury
, and is not associated with the Glastonbury name. However, the Bridal Bouquet pattern was continued on other blanks during the 1960s and these pieces should be referred to as Glastonbury Lotus.
The Lotus Glass Company Inc. -
The Lotus Glass Company was established in
Barnesville , Ohio in 1912. Although they called themselves a glass company, they were actually a decorating company and employed well known craftsmen to add cuttings, and metal decorations to the glass that they acquired from many of the well known glass makers of the Depression era such as Hocking, Imperial, West Virginia Glass, Duncan and Miller, New Martinsville / Viking, Fostoria
, Heisey, Cambridge, Paden City, and Bryce Brothers. Lotus added deep plate etches, cuttings, 24 and 22 K gold, and Sterling Silver hand made decorations to the pieces and sold them under the Lotus name.
The 1940's and 1950's were the pinnacle of Lotus' success and at that time the company employed over 100 workers. In 1960s Lotus bought a glass cutting company called Glastonbury which was located in Chicago, IL and changed their name to
Glastonbury/Lotus. They ceased operation in 1995 and sold their assets and machinery at auction. Lotus patterns and designs have been collected for over a century and have earned a place in American history.
