Description
This Victorian bridal basket is engraved with birds and floral design and the basket has a movable handle topped with two love birds. The intricate design is carried over to the basket's sides and pedestal. Breathtaking! This beautiful piece could be used as a flower girl basket, an accent piece at a reception or in the home, in a powder room to hold hand towels, as a floral centerpiece, or to serve candy, desserts, or fruit. This basket was made by Meriden and shows the mark on the underside. Probably from the 1890s. Still beautiful as the pictures show, but there are signs of age fitting for a piece this old. Particularly take note pf black marks on main surface as shown in the pictures.
The "bride basket" was popular in the 1880s as a luxury gift for a bride on her wedding day. Used in weddings in the early 19th century by flower girls to scatter flower petals down the church aisle, brides later used them to showcase their bridal bouquet during the reception or to serve sweets or fruit during later dinners with friends and family.
